George’s House, Boulder, 2024

Print available at www.jonathanmachen.art

I was headed for downtown Boulder on the mall

I’m painting for the festival, for the plein-air festival

I went on down to park my car, and saw to my surprise

A checkered car and a checkered house, the house with monochrome eyes

**********

I got my white shirt, got my paints, got my Gamsol

I’m going to paint right here on the spot, forget about the mall

And then this guy, right next to me, he starts to mow the lawn

I had to move because the stench, because the noise was strong

*************

And there’s a lady who lives nearby, she’s waiting for her mail

She’s running for the primary in district eighteen

She talked about those neighbors, who owned the painted house

That’s how I learned who owned the car and the house with monochrome eyes

************

And so the people who own this house, creative spirits they be

George and Melanie (Peters) and Art their legacy

They’ve been in Boulder, for 40 odd years, and never met them once

I finally did, so we had some coffee, and talked and talked a bunch at

Tom Marshall , the same person who was mowing the lawn, served as a portrait subject of me at a war protest in Denver in 2002l

This day of painting was full of interesting connections, with synchronicities pointing back to early art endeavors I had completed.

Tom did not seem to recognize me; I told him that I knew who he was, and had even done a portrait of him based on photos I took at a war protest in Denver, but he didn’t remember me. No matter, I remembered him!

Melanie and George Peters

A few months later, after I had completed the Open Studios pleinair festival, I decided I had to meet George. I phoned him up and told him the story about how I ended up painting his house in the 2024 Pleinair Festival. We arranged to meet, and had a lovely time getting to know each other, catching up on all the years we had been artists in Boulder, yet had never once crossed paths – until now!

To complete the circle of art connection, George purchased my painting and it is now residing inside ‘The House with Monochrome Eyes’, a fitting location.

Because of these synchronicities and the evolution of friendship through art, I wrote a song, below:
