This little drawing, done while on a backpacking trip with Michael Conti in the Holy Cross Wilderness in Colorado in 2000, is another time that I used a lightweight field setup for sketching. I made a bunch of little paper squares for this trip, each measuring about 4″X4″. My pack was pretty heavy with limited space, so I needed to go light. When I did the sketch, we had just hiked up this amazing trail leading into the Holy Cross Wilderness, and came across this ‘ghost town’ of sorts. I saw this composition and sketched it on the spot. I think Michael (at this point, we had done many outdoor adventures together) was used to me needing to stand still for 20 minutes or longer while I did a pleinair sketch. I did it in pencil, and finished it up later in ink and watercolor.
